ServiceNow Certifications Employers Ask For in 2026: CSA, CAD, CIS and CTA, Counted From the Postings
Now Contracts Research · Oct 27, 2026
The CSA is named in 41 of 135 employer-direct ServiceNow postings on this board, the CAD in 23, CIS-ITSM in 22 and the CTA in 6. On Dice only 17% of ServiceNow postings mention certification at all. Which credential opens which roles, the order to take them, and when they stop mattering.
Certifications matter more in ServiceNow than in most enterprise software, and less than the training industry implies. The postings settle the argument. This board held 135 active ServiceNow roles on 27 October 2026, all taken from employers' own career sites. Every posting is tagged for the certifications it names, so the counts below are what hiring managers wrote, not what a course vendor says they want.
What the postings name
| Certification | Postings naming it (of 135) | Where those roles sit |
|---|---|---|
| CSA (Certified System Administrator) | 41 | Platform Administration (17 roles) and almost every developer posting |
| CAD (Certified Application Developer) | 23 | App Engine (18) and Integrations (26) |
| CIS-ITSM | 22 | ITSM, the largest category at 38 |
| CIS-SAM | 9 | ITAM/SAM/HAM (8) |
| CTA (Certified Technical Architect) | 6 | Platform Architecture (20) |
| CIS-SecOps | 5 | SecOps (12) |
| CIS-Discovery and CIS-ITOM | 4 and 3 | ITOM (10) |
| CIS-RC | 2 | IRM/GRC (13) |
| CIS-CSM | 1 | CSM (4) |
Now Assist, which is a product rather than a certification, is named in 15 postings. The tagging reads titles and descriptions, so "CSA required" and "CSA preferred" count the same. Treat the numbers as how often a credential is in the conversation, not how often it is a hard gate.
Two patterns stand out. The CSA appears in 30% of postings, roughly twice as often as the CAD. And the product-line certifications track the categories closely: 22 CIS-ITSM mentions against 38 ITSM roles, 9 CIS-SAM against 8 ITAM roles. Where a product line has a certification, employers name it.
The general boards tell a softer story
A sample taken on Dice on 22 October 2026 found "ServiceNow certified" in 612 of 3,591 ServiceNow postings, or 17%. That is nearly double Workday's 9.6% the same day, so ServiceNow is a credential-aware market. But it also means five in six Dice postings do not mention certification at all.
The gap between 17% on Dice and 30% here is the poster mix. Three in four Dice "ServiceNow developer" results come from staffing firms, which write loose requirements to widen the funnel. Federal integrators and partners posting on their own sites name the credential because their contracts and partner tiers depend on certified headcount.
One caution from the vendor's own community forum, read in October 2026: a developer holding both the CSA and CAD was posting for an internship. Certifications open the door. Hands-on work on a production instance gets the offer.
What each one unlocks
CSA. The prerequisite for everything else. It covers tables, forms, access control, flows and update sets. On its own it qualifies you for administrator roles, such as the junior developer and systems administrator postings from the federal integrators. It does not get you a developer salary by itself.
CAD. The scripting and application-building credential. It is what employers mean by "developer" rather than "administrator", and it is the one most often paired with Integration Hub and Flow Designer in the integration roles.
CIS-ITSM, CIS-SAM, CIS-Discovery, CIS-SecOps, CIS-RC. Product-line implementation specialist exams. Each one maps to a category on this board and to a pay band. ITSM is the baseline. SAM, Discovery, SecOps and Risk are where posted contract rates move from $55 to $70 an hour toward $90 to $110, as the pay guide shows.
CTA. The architect credential, held by far fewer people than the postings that ask for it. It appears in 6 of 135 postings here, but the Platform Architecture category holds 20 roles, so most architect roles are hired on track record. Holding it shortens the conversation; see the platform architect postings in Chantilly for the shape of the role.
Cost and sequence
Mainline exams are sold through the vendor's training arm, usually bundled with the paid course for that certification. Prices change by region and year, so check the current catalog rather than a blog. Employers routinely pay: partner tiers and federal contract labor categories both reward certified staff, which is why partners fund exams for people already on the bench. The vendor's RiseUp program listed more than 600 free courses and 18 certification paths as of September 2023, and the free material covers most of the CSA syllabus.
Certifications do not stay valid on their own. Each release (Xanadu, Yokohama, Zurich) carries a short delta exam, and a lapsed delta lapses the credential. Budget a few hours per release.
The sequence the postings reward is simple. CSA first, within your first six months on a real instance. Then CIS-ITSM or CAD, depending on whether you lean functional or technical. Then a second product line (Discovery, SAM, SecOps or Risk), which is the step that moves pay. The CTA comes last, after several implementations, and is covered in the administrator-to-architect ladder.
How to use this
- Starting out: get the CSA, then apply to administration and junior developer roles. Do not wait for the CAD to start applying.
- Two to four years in: pair the CAD with one CIS exam that matches a category with real volume here: ITSM, SecOps or IRM.
- Choosing a specialty: the product-line ranking shows which lines pay premiums. Certify toward those, not toward the line you happen to know.
- Reading a posting: "certified preferred" from a staffing firm is noise. "CSA and CAD required" from Deloitte, CACI or Leidos is a real filter, often tied to a contract clause.
- Track the market: browse the CSA, CAD and CTA tag pages, or set an alert for the certification you are studying for.
