ServiceNow ITOM, Discovery and CMDB Jobs in 2026: 71 Open Roles, Who Posts Them and Why They Pay a Premium
Now Contracts Research · Oct 29, 2026
The ITOM category holds 71 live roles, the CIS-Discovery tag 33 and a CMDB search 39. Posted salaries run $98K to $169K with cleared CMDB roles at GovCIO ($150K to $220K) and BAE ($150K to $254K) well above that, and contract rates sit at $55 to $85 an hour. Who hires, what Discovery and Service Mapping work actually involves, and how to move into it from ITSM development.
Every ServiceNow instance has a CMDB, and most of them are wrong. That is the whole ITOM job market in one sentence. On 29 October 2026 the IT Operations Management category on Now Contracts holds 71 live roles, the CIS-Discovery tag is on 33, and a search for CMDB returns 39. The product-line ranking put ITOM among the lines with a pay premium over general development; this is what the roles look like and who is posting them.
Who posts ITOM and CMDB roles
The inventory divides into four groups.
Federal integrators, cleared. GovCIO posts a CMDB senior specialist in Arlington at $150K to $220K with a Secret clearance. BAE Systems posts CMDB engineers and platform engineers in Sterling and Herndon, Virginia at $150K to $254K, clearance required. Booz Allen has a CMDB and data quality senior developer in McLean at $78K to $176K. Peraton posts ITOM Discovery and Service Mapping engineers in Tampa and at MacDill at $104K to $166K. TEKsystems places a cleared ITSM/ITOM developer at Fort Meade at $55 to $90 an hour. These are the best-paid roles in the category and sit in the Virginia, DC and Tampa clusters the geography guide maps.
End customers. M&T Bank (a CMDB Discovery specialist in Buffalo at $97K to $162K), The Hartford (a CMDB product owner manager at $132K to $198K), JLL ($170K to $205K), SHI ($120K to $145K), Equinix, State Street, Ahold Delhaize and Unum (an ITOM senior engineer at $89K to $184K). These are permanent, often remote, and the product-owner titles are a sign that CMDB has become a managed asset rather than a project.
Staffing firms. Randstad Digital (a senior ITSM/ITOM developer in Bridgewater, New Jersey at $55 to $65 an hour), The Brixton Group (a CMDB/Discovery/ITOM senior developer in Philadelphia at $70 to $85), Openkyber (ITOM developers in DC and Charlotte at $54 to $77), TALENT Software Services (an ITOM and integration specialist in Arizona at $70 to $75), Trident Consulting, Mastech, Alldus and Stefanini. The contract layer of the ITOM market, almost all W2.
Partners and subcontractors. ICF (a CMDB and ITSM process integrator, remote, $99K to $168K), EmpowerAI (a CMDB configuration analyst, remote, $96K to $149K), CACI (a CMDB operations developer, remote, $75K to $158K), Fabergent (a CMDB and Discovery engineer with MID architecture in Englewood, Colorado), Sierra Nevada Corporation (senior ITSM/ITOM/ITAM developers in Littleton, Colorado).
What the work is
ITOM postings describe four kinds of work, and most roles mix two of them.
- Discovery. MID server placement and credentials, discovery schedules, patterns for the things the out-of-the-box patterns miss, and the cloud discovery connectors for AWS, Azure and GCP. The CIS-Discovery certification maps to this directly.
- CMDB health. The identification and reconciliation engine, CI class modelling, duplicate remediation, data sources and their precedence, and the dashboards that show the CMDB is trusted. This is what the product-owner and data-quality roles are about, and it is where the end customers hire.
- Service Mapping. Top-down maps of application services, the entry points, the patterns that follow a transaction through the stack. Named mostly by the federal integrators (Peraton, GovCIO) and the larger end customers.
- Event Management and integrations. Alert intake from monitoring tools, alert correlation, and the connectors to the monitoring, cloud and asset systems around the instance. The integration guide covers that side; many ITOM postings are half integration roles.
ITAM is adjacent and increasingly bundled: Sierra Nevada's "ITSM/ITOM/ITAM" developer titles and Alldus's "ITAM/ITOM business process consultant" are typical, because software asset management depends on the same discovery data. The CIS-SAM credential is the other half of the pairing.
What it pays
| Segment | Posted pay | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ITOM category, salary | $98K to $169K typical, 31 postings with pay | Rates page |
| ITOM category, contract | $55 to $85 an hour | Brixton at the top, Randstad and Openkyber at the bottom |
| Cleared CMDB roles at integrators | $150K to $254K | GovCIO, BAE |
| End-customer CMDB product owners | $120K to $205K | JLL, The Hartford, SHI |
| Remote federal subcontractor roles | $75K to $168K | CACI, ICF, EmpowerAI |
Against the board-wide posted range of $108K to $170K and $65 to $75 an hour, the ITOM typical band is about even and the top end is far higher. The premium the pay guide describes lives in the cleared and senior roles, not in the generalist "ITSM/ITOM developer" contracts, which are priced as ITSM. The way to capture it is to be the person whose title says Discovery, CMDB or Service Mapping rather than "ITSM/ITOM".
Few of the 71 roles are fully remote, and the ones that are come from the subcontractors and the end customers rather than the integrators, as the remote guide notes. ITOM is on-site work more often than the platform average because the MID servers, the monitoring tools and the network people are on site.
Moving into ITOM from ITSM development
The most common route into these roles runs through CMDB work on an ITSM program, and the postings show the steps.
- Own the CMDB on your current instance. Volunteer for the duplicate cleanup nobody wants. Learn the identification rules and the data sources. This is what the CMDB analyst roles (EmpowerAI, Booz Allen) hire for, and it is the entry point.
- Get CIS-Discovery. It is the product-line certification with the clearest mapping to a category, and the certification guide found it named alongside CIS-ITOM in the postings. Employers pay for it once you are on a program.
- Learn the MID server and one cloud connector. Most Discovery problems are credentials and network, not ServiceNow. Being able to debug them is what separates an ITOM engineer from a developer who has clicked through the Discovery setup.
- Then Service Mapping or Event Management. Pick based on who is hiring near you: the federal integrators want Service Mapping; the banks and insurers want Event Management and the monitoring integrations.
- If you can get cleared, get cleared. The spread between a $65-an-hour ITOM contract and a $200K cleared CMDB role is mostly the clearance. The clearance guide covers how.
The ITOM category, the CIS-Discovery and CIS-ITOM tags, and a search for CMDB on the jobs page cover the whole market, and the interview guide describes what the ITOM technical screen asks.
